On September 21, Professor Shi Zhong-ci, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences officially took office as the President of Zhejiang Wanli Unversity.
Mr. Shi is a well-known scientist from Ningbo. In 1955, he graduated from the Mathematics Department of Fudan University. He is now a research fellow in the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Science and Engineering Computation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also the chief scientist in the state project “Large-scale Science and Engineering Computation”. In 1991, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has also held a number of prominent academic positions in China, such as the director of the mathematics department of the China Science and Technology University, director of the computer centre of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of the state key lab of Science and Engineering Computation, vice-chairperson of Chinese Mathematics Association. He had been a member of the first, second and third examination and appraisal panel of the academic degree committee under the State Council.
Mr Shi has been very much concerned with education in Ningbo, his birthplace. He used to be a guest professor and counsellor of our university, regularly giving lectures to teachers and students alike, which proved very beneficial and fruitful. He is also favourably impressed with the Wanli Mode.
On the afternoon of October 21, an appointment ceremony was held in the presence of leaders of the Wanli Education Group and Wanli University. The Wanli Education Group Party Committee Secretary and President Ying Yong read out the appointment document by the Education Committee of the Party Committee of Zhejiang Province. The Chairperson of Wanli University Board Xu Ya-fen presented the letter of appointment to Mr. Shi.
President Shi then made a significant speech. He explained why he repeatedly turned down many similar offers from other universities but was glad to be the president of Wanli University, saying he has great admiration for the new school-running system. He went on to elaborate on the different roles of the president and the executive president, saying he will support the current leadership. Finally, he voiced his hopes that all teachers and students will continue to work hard to meet the forthcoming undergraduate teaching evaluation, and focus on strengthening their resolve and carrying forward the Wanli Spirit.
The executive president Chen Jue-xiang presided over the ceremony. He said that under the leadership of Mr. Shi, the university will certainly make greater progress. He added that the establishment of thr president and executive president is itself an innovation of the Wanli system and mechanism.
