The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou was successfully closed on the evening of October 8. Teachers and students of ZWU watched the closing ceremony of the Asian Games, experiencing together the culture of the Asian Games and bidding farewell to the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Students on Qianhu Campus, organized by Youth League Committee of ZWU, gathered at Wanjia Cafeteria and watched the closing ceremony. Holding small national flags, they reminisced about the unforgettable moments during the Games. Inside the campus gymnasium, the school basketball team members sat on the floor and watched the closing ceremony together. The scenes of athletes’ performance reminded the team members of their daily training and sweat-soaked moments. The secondary colleges also organized teachers and students to watch the closing ceremony in their own ways. The audience all enjoyed the cheerful atmosphere of the closing ceremony and cheered for the success of the Asian Games, feeling proud of the great achievements of our country and touched by smiling faces of the athletes after their hard work.

During the Asian Games, more than 30,000 volunteers, including some of ZWU teachers and students, successfully completed the their volunteer tasks, and gained numerous praises.

Zhang Fan, a teacher from the English Department of the Foreign Languages College of ZWU, served as the language service supervisor of the operation team of Ningbo Xiangshan Beach Volleyball Center. Since April 2023, she has been serving in the Asian Games. When she first arrived at the Beach Volleyball Center, in order to better engage herself in the work, Ms. Zhang often used her lunch break to get familiar with the venues. She also made the list of an English glossary of beach volleyball rules, which she used to train her own team members who were nicknamed “Little Green Lotuses”. On the afternoon of Sept. 27, the beach volleyball project of the Hangzhou 19th Asian Games held its first press conference, where she, as a language service supervisor, made her “official debut” in public. She was responsible for the debugging of the Chinese, English and Japanese interpretation equipment to ensure the smooth running of the press conference. The pre-game technical officials’ meeting was the most important mobilization occasion before the start of the beach volleyball matches and Zhang Fan was in charge of the behind-the-scenes translation work of the meeting. Her professionalism was recognized and praised by the technical officials at the meeting. During the matches, Zhang Fan also provided translation services for media reporters from the United States, Qatar, Japan and other countries and helped them with their interviews. While introducing the venues in precise English language, she also designed many interactive sessions to convey the subtle connotations of Chinese culture to the foreign guests. In addition, she also helped local journalists translate their video clips.

“I hope that through my professional ability and passionate service, I can provide the best language service to everyone who comes to the Beach Volleyball Center,” Ms. Zhang Fan made her pledge, who successfully completed her volunteering journey on October 25.

A total of 10 Wanli students participated in the volunteer service of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. They were distributed in the venues of Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, and Jinhua, mainly engaged in audience guidance, seat management, media assistance and other volunteer services. On behalf of ZWU, they contributed to the success of the Asian Games with their enthusiastic and meticulous services.

As a student volunteer, I was honored to have witnessed this wonderful event and share the endless joy and passion in my heart. By volunteering during the Hangzhou Asian Games, I have gained friendship and experience. This will be the best memory of my youth and the most valuable experience in my life.

People gathered in Hangzhou to celebrate the Asian Games. It was a great honor to be able to watch the closing ceremony on-site as a student volunteer. Although the flame of the Asian Games has been extinguished and a sports carnival has come to an end, the spirit of the Asian Games will permanently stay on this land by the Qiantang River.

In this autumn season, when the lotus and laurel meet, the Hangzhou Asian Games officially waved goodbye to us. During the event, the beautiful city of Hangzhou showed the world the charm of China, allowing the world to hear the voice of China, feel the warmth of China, and witness socialism with Chinese characteristics in this new era.

The 2023 Asian Games were very exciting. Whether it was the 48-year-old Chusovikina, the oldest female gymnast, or the 16-year-old Quan Hongchan, who always dazzles everyone with her amazing skills, all of them have demonstrated the unremitting spirit of sportsmanship. They are all role models for us in the pursuit of our own dreams.
