As a new-type industrial technology research institute with separate legal entity, Ninghai Mariculture Breeding Industry Research Institute was jointly established in November 2018 by ZWU, Ocean University of China and the People’s Government of Ninghai County. “Rooted in the local area, representing the country, striving for excellence and serving the industry”, the institute is focused on breaking through the technological “bottlenecks” in mariculture breeding by conducting research on the characteristic species of aquatic products in the coastal waters of Zhejiang Province.

With a total investment of 120 million yuan, ZWU has built and put into use a research and teaching complex with an area of 14,000 square meters. Prof. Bao Zhenmin, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Ocean University of China, is the chief expert of the institute. Additionally, there are many professional R&D teams consisting of more than 30 full-time doctors at home and abroad. Till now, the institute has bred three new nationally-certified aquatic varieties: M. meretrix “Wanli Hong” , M. meretrix “Wanli No.2” , and S. constricta “Yongle No.1”. In the past three years, the total area for breeding aquatic products has reached 14,667 hectares, with an increase of more than 60,000 tons in production, an increase of more than 1.2 billion yuan in economic benefits and a total of 3,350 grassroots fishery technicians and fishermen trained. It’s worth mentioning that “Ninghai Industry and Education Integration Practical Training Base for Cultivating Outstanding Talents in the Mariculture Breeding Industry” has been selected for “the 14th Five-Year Plan” and “Education Power”, two promotion projects initiated by the National Development and Reform Commission.
